Birmingham born and bred, Aktar’s exposure to British cuisine and the strong influence from his culture and heritage are what have shaped his approach and unique style. Another of his influences is his mother’s exceptional culinary skills. He was able to glean a lot of knowledge through attentively watching her cook in the family kitchen as a child.
Encouraged by this interest, his mother supported and provided guidance and patient tutelage to a willing and able young Aktar.
Aktar pays particular attention to ingredients and cooking styles, working closely with specialist suppliers to secure the finest meats, fish and poultry. Paying attention to certain breeds of animal, vegetables and sustainable fish sources are all part and parcel of Aktar’s cooking process and methodology.
He highlights the best flavours of the ingredients to capture a very special moment of satisfaction and indulgence when the dish has been served and eaten, making sure that the history of the Subcontinent, its wonderful and diverse culture and timeless dishes are served to spark interest and exude charm to the diner.
Aktar’s passion for creating modern South Asian cuisine has ensured his meteoric rise as one of the most talented chefs in the UK. His TV appearances include Market Kitchen and Gordon Ramsay’s F Word on Channel 4, where he steered Lasan to victory as Chef Ramsay’s Best Local Restaurant in 2009.
Winning BBC 2’s Great British Menu in Spring 2011 has secured his reputation as an entertaining and engaging television chef.
Aktar is a regular face at shows and events including BBC Good Food Show and Grand Designs Live. He has also been recognised by Buckingham Palace for his contribution to the British hospitality industry. Aktar was awarded his first Michelin Star in 2019 at Opheem!
